Tips for Natural Deodorant

With Mindful exercise comes a lot of not-so-pleasant sweat, and nowadays people are turning to do-it-yourself recipes to rid themselves of offensive body odor. You can easily make your own natural deodorant with a few ingredients from your pantry and the Mindful tips listed below.

Key Deodorant Ingredients

One of the main ingredients to most natural deodorants is virgin coconut oil. This oil contains lauric acid, which will help kill odor-causing bacteria commonly associated with sweat. Another key ingredient is the baking soda. Baking soda is known for its ability to absorb and eliminate offensive odors. Lastly, there are the essential oils. These oils will give your deodorant a pleasant smell. You can choose a fragrance that you enjoy the most or you can pick an essential oil that smells nice and kills odor-causing bacteria, too, such as sage or Roman chamomile. The recipe listed below also includes shea butter and cornstarch. The shea butter has vitamins and fatty acids will keep your underarms smooth and prevent irritation. The cornstarch will absorb armpit moisture as well.

Mindful Homemade Deodorant

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of shea butter
  • 3 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • a few drops of essential oil, such as sage or Roman chamomile (they have a nice fragrance and can help fight bacteria).

Directions

  • Make a double boiler by placing a half-pint glass jar in the middle of a small pot of water. Bring water to a simmer.
  • Add coconut oil and shea butter to the jar and let it melt.
  • Turn off the heat, add baking soda and cornstarch, and stir until completely smooth.
  • Add your essential oils.
  • When the mixture has cooled slightly, pour it into a fun silicone mold or an old store-bought deodorant tube that has been thoroughly cleaned out. Let it cool.
  • Once the mixture is at room temperature it’ll be in a solid form and you can rub it directly onto your underarms. Katherine Martinko at Treehugger suggests that people keep their homemade deodorant in the fridge during the summer months so that it doesn’t melt.
